Occupational Therapist Assistant & Physiotherapist Assistant

This program is designed to prepare students with the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to perform their role as occupational therapist assistants and physiotherapist assistants (OTAs and PTAs). OTAs and PTAs are primarily responsible for implementation of treatment plans to promote physical functioning or to enhance participation in activities of daily living for individuals with a wide range of health conditions. The program integrates classroom theory with hands-on practical skills learning in living lab settings. To enhance critical thinking, decision making and leadership skills, the program makes use of diverse learning opportunities such as small group case-based learning, simulation exercises, applied learning projects and e-learning. Exposure to clinical experiences across a variety of clinical settings is integrated into the curriculum to ensure students have an opportunity to apply skills in a supervised setting.

Recreational therapy

Recreational therapy, also known as therapeutic recreation, is a systematic process that utilizes recreation and other activity-based interventions to address the assessed needs of individuals with illnesses and/or disabling conditions, as a means to psychological and physical health, recovery and well-being.The purpose of the RT process is to improve or maintain physical, cognitive, social, emotional and spiritual functioning in order to facilitate full participation in life. Services are provided or directly supervised by a “Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist” (CTRS).

Recreational therapy includes, but is not limited to, providing treatment services and recreation activities to individuals using a variety of techniques including arts and crafts, animals, sports, games, dance and movement, drama, music, and community outings. Recreational therapists treat and help maintain the physical, mental, and emotional well-being of their clients by seeking to reduce depression, stress, and anxiety; recover basic motor functioning and reasoning abilities; build confidence; and socialize effectively. Recreational therapists should not be confused with recreation workers, who organize recreational activities primarily for enjoyment.

Fitness & health promotion

Fitness and Health Promotion, taught within the School of Community and Health Studies, is a two-year health diploma program that will include: Anatomy and physiology. Fitness assessment. Leadership skills. Injury management. Fitness and Health Promotion program is comprised of hands-on practical learning in laboratory and placement settings and a comprehensive academic grounding that will prepare you for a career assisting individuals and groups to reach their highest potential for overall well-being.

Massage therapy

Massage therapy is the practice of applying external physical pressure to muscles and soft tissue to reduce physical pain and tension. Massage has been used for centuries to relieve stress, anxiety, pain, and many other mental and physical discomforts. In all its varying forms, massage is a mainstay of holistic health regimens and is gaining recognition in mainstream medicine as a viable way to help improve health.

Workplace wellness & health promotion

Workplace Health and Wellness honour’s degree program, the first of its kind in Canada, provides students with specialized education in state-of-the-art bioscience laboratories and classrooms to pursue careers in various health and wellness fields or post-graduate opportunities. This program is multi-disciplinary in nature, drawing from the fields of leadership; mental, physical, and psychological health; business and communication; and knowledge translation.

EXERCISE SCIENCE & LIFESTYLE MANAGEMENT

The program provides in-depth, hands-on instruction in the areas of fitness assessment, health and lifestyle counseling, exercise prescription and delivery, health promotion, group exercise leadership, health and fitness management, marketing and entrepreneurship, ergonomic assessment, and functional abilities assessment. Students learn in small groups instructed by expert faculty currently employed in the fitness and health industry. This program prepares students to challenge entry-to-practice examinations from various governing bodies. The combination of theoretical and practical learning is strongly displayed in program graduates’ success in these endeavors’, successfully completing them at rates significantly higher than provincial averages of individuals challenging the credential requirements immediately after completion of an undergraduate degree.

Respiratory Therapy

Respiratory Therapy is a three-year Advanced Diploma program where students learn cardiopulmonary anatomy, chemistry, theory, pharmacology, pathology, physiology, and more. This program is taught in a brand new clinical lab by experts in the field. Graduates will be able to perform diagnostic tests such as pulmonary function, cardiac stress and sleep behavior.

Recreation therapy

Recreation therapy use activities such as arts and crafts, music, dance, drama, sports, swimming, movement, and community trips to support their patients. As a recreational therapist, you would design interventions to help reduce anxiety, depression, stress, and physical symptoms and aid recovery.
