Captioning & Court Reporting

Captioners and court reporters are highly skilled professionals who can capture speech at speeds of 225 words per minute (wpm) and higher. Using an electronic shorthand machine and sophisticated computer technology, reporters translate a conversation virtually simultaneously to the printed word.
Being a captioner or court reporter is a profession like no other. It is exciting to meet the challenges when no 2 days are alike and when you learn new and fascinating information every day.
NAIT offers the only captioning and court reporting program in western Canada to be approved by the National Court Reporters Association – a 35,000 member organization based in the United States. Consequently, the program is well-regarded and graduates obtain employment not only across Canada and the United States, but around the world

Graduates are in strong demand and are compensated well. Captioning and court reporting has had an extremely high graduate placement rate since program inception. Thanks to the increased demand for captioning in digital media, these rates are expected to increase.

Criminal Justice

Crime is a fascinating subject. The number of books, movies and television programmes devoted to it attest to people’s interest in the problem of crime. So too does the extensive and often sensational coverage that crime receives in the media. But, as this subject reveals, crime is a complex issue. While studying towards Criminology and Criminal Justice, you will learn that it is considerably more complex than the superficial and romanticised portrayal it often receives in fictional writings and the media.The study of Criminology and Criminal justice will equip you with the knowledge needed for creating and maintaining a safe society, as well as allowing students to acquire an in-depth understanding of the complexities of criminal, delinquent and deviant behaviours and both individual and societal reactions to crime. This study area also teaches you valuable transferable skills such as presentation, research, analytical problem solving and communication, among others.Moreover, the study area offers an in-depth conceptualisation of modern crime, punishment and victimisation. Crime and victimisation have severe consequences for the sustained development of a society, the economy and ecology. This subject provides expert knowledge to deal effectively with crime, conflict and victimisation and to promote a democratic and just society with a human rights perspective, as set out in the South African Constitution and Bill of Rights.

Criminology/Law Clerk

The Office of Defense Services offers law school students the opportunity to assist our attorneys in providing superior legal representation to indigent individuals and in advancing the cause of equal justice under the law. Our law clerk programs are designed to expose students to all aspects of criminal defense work, the Delaware courts and the Delaware criminal justice system. Law clerks experience and work in a hard-working criminal defense office consisting of experienced trial and appellate attorneys. Our clerks are considered integral members of the defense teams to which they are assigned.Positions in our law clerk program are unpaid and available in our offices located in each of the counties in the state. Candidates are encouraged to obtain financial assistance through work study, grants or other sources. Academic credits may be available to students as well.

Law enforcement investigations close cases and can prevent new crimes from occurring. Training in research-based investigative procedures and access to tools and resources can help law enforcement officers carry out successful investigations.NIJ research enhances the forensic aspects of investigations and supports the creation and maintenance of investigative resources, such as manuals, databases and training courses.NIJ has funded research in several areas relevant to investigations, including crime mapping, forensic tool testing and evidence reliability. Alternative Dispute Resolution

Disputes are a part of human association. Legally speaking, when one person makes a claim against the other based on a certain law or legal principle, and the other person denies the claim, there is a dispute.The term Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) refers to a range of methods and processes of dispute resolution. Significantly, these methods are very rapidly transforming from mere ‘alternatives’ into preferred methods of resolving disputes. The promise of ADR methods is low cost, fast resolution and an outcome acceptable to both parties. Unfortunately, due to improper or ineffective use these methods often fail to deliver on these promises

Crime Analytics

The program teaches students how to define criminal trends and use analysis to create strategies that lead to an effective response from law enforcement. Courses cover crime data analysis; criminal investigative analysis; computer applications for crime and intelligence analysis; and law enforcement research and statistical methods..

Paralegal

paralegal, also known as a legal assistant, or paralegal specialist is a legal professional who performs tasks that require knowledge of legal concepts but not the full expertise of a lawyerwith a license to practice law. The market for paralegals is broad, including consultancies, companies that have legal departments or that perform legislative and regulatory compliance activities in areas such as environment, labor, intellectual property, zoning, and tax. Legal offices and public bodies also have many paralegals in support activities using other titles outside of the standard titles used in the profession. There is a diverse array of work experiences attainable within the paralegal (legal assistance) field, ranging between internship, entry-level, associate, junior, mid-senior, and senior level positions.

Victimology/Legal Assistant

Victimology is the study of crime victims. It’s a subset of criminology, the study of crime. People who study victimology, or victimization, examine the psychological effects of crimes on the victims, the interactions between victims and the criminal justice system and the relationships between victims and offenders.
